I was reading about this the other day because my low fuel light is glitchy. According to a bunch of old posts, the reserve is 5+ gallons, but I usually end up putting in around 13 when the needle is at E. They also said that the reason for this was that a bunch of sludge accumulated at the very bottom of the tank or something and that running your tank to the very bottom could cause excess wear on the fuel filter or even clog the injectors. In every car I've been in, there's been some kind of reserve after the gas light goes on (usually a few gallons). The Z has an unusually large one. It's not a defect, it's just making sure you don't get stranded.
